Size

Your artwork, laser-engraved on two-tone leather patches. The laser burns through the colored top layer to the dark core underneath, so the design is cut into the patch rather than printed on it — there is no ink to peel, crack or wash off.

What they are made of

leather, also called leatherette, with an iron-on backing. It takes a crisp burn and it holds an edge when it is cut to the outline of your artwork.

A note on color

The hides are dyed in batches, and two sheets of the same color can burn differently — I have had two sheets of the same stock come out noticeably apart. Expect small variation between runs, and between the color on your screen and the one that arrives.

If you are ordering a batch that has to match itself exactly, say so and I will cut the whole run from one sheet.

Pricing

  • 2" patch — $4 each
  • 3" patch — $6 each
  • No minimum order
  • Design fee, charged once per design — $50 if you send print-ready artwork, $100 if I create the design for you

Ordering a lot of them

Those prices are for small runs. Past about fifty patches the price per patch comes down, and it keeps coming down the more you need. This page cannot work that out for you — email support@thevoidcreates.com with the size, the design and roughly how many you need, and I will quote it properly.

Worth asking even if you are near the line rather than over it. Fifty is not a wall, it is where it starts being worth a conversation.

How they attach

Iron-on backing on every patch, so it presses straight onto a hat, a jacket, a bag or a shirt with no sewing.

285°F / 140°C for 30 seconds.

On anything that gets washed hard or worked hard, a few stitches around the edge is cheap insurance.

The design fee is charged once

You pay it the first time a design goes on the laser. After that the file stays on record and every reorder is just the patch cost — no design fee, however long it has been or however many you come back for. Reorders go through Patch Reprint.

Reordering at a different size, color or quantity costs nothing extra. Nothing about the artwork has changed, so there is nothing to redraw.

$20 covers a minor correction — a spelling fix, a small wording change. That is the limit of it. Anything past a text tweak is a new design and carries the design fee again, because at that point I am drawing rather than correcting.

If the correction is fixing an error of mine, there is no charge. I would rather you tell me than live with it.

Proofs and revisions

Two rounds of proofs are included. I send you a proof, you tell me what to change, I send another. That covers almost every job.

Past that, each further round is $25. That is not a penalty — redrawing is the work, and somewhere past the second pass it stops being a correction and starts being a new design.

Rounds caused by my error do not count. If the proof does not match what you sent me, fixing it is on me and it is free.

Who keeps what

Artwork you send me stays yours. That never changes.

The production file I build to cut from stays with me — I do not send out source files. It is kept on record so your reorders cost nothing extra, which is the whole point of charging the design fee once instead of every time.

How long it takes

Most orders go out within the week, usually by that weekend. I will not promise a date I have not looked at first, so if you are working to a deadline, tell me up front and I will say straight away whether I can hit it.

Ordering more than one design

Every item in your cart is one design with its own artwork. Three new designs and two reorders is five items in one cart — three here and two on Patch Reprint — each with its own file uploaded to it. They are engraved and shipped together.

If it does not hold up, I replace it

I stand behind every patch that leaves here. Burned, torn, or met a memorable end — tell me what happened and I will usually send another one out. A valid reason works. So does a good story.

How to order

  1. Pick your size and color.
  2. Set how many patches you need.
  3. Choose your artwork option and upload your file or reference images.

Artwork guidelines

Vector files work best — SVG, AI, PDF, or DXF. A high-resolution PNG is fine for simpler designs. If you would rather I design it, send sketches, photos, or a written description and I will take it from there.

You will get a proof to approve before anything is engraved.

Not a patch?

Patches are set up for self-serve ordering, but the laser does not care what it is burning. Wood, metal, acrylic, engraved coins — if you can hold it, there is a good chance I can put your artwork on it. Designers and product people: acrylic is quick enough to prototype with. Tell me what you have in mind and I will quote it.
