Custom work

Patches are what is set up to order straight off the shelf. Everything else starts with a conversation — tell me what you have in mind at the bottom of this page and I will come back with a quote.

Designers and product people: skip to acrylic and rapid prototyping. Send a flat file, get a physical part back.

Wood

Signs, plaques, boxes, coasters, place cards. A deep burn on a light grain, and the contrast is in the wood itself rather than sitting on top of it.

I burned that set for my own wedding. Twelve tables, twelve placards, cut and numbered in an evening.

Cutting boards take a logo well, and they make a good gift for a business that is just getting started.

PU leather

Patches, tags, panels and brand labels in two-tone PU leather — leatherette — cut to the outline of the artwork rather than a circle, with an iron-on backing. The laser burns through the colored top layer to the dark core, so the mark is part of the material and there is no ink to peel. The same file scales down further than you would expect.

Four sizes of one label, for a maker who wanted the same mark on her tags, her packaging and the product itself.

Metal and coins

Coated and anodized stock, tumblers, plates and challenge coins. Every job starts as a design file — this is what one looks like before anything is cut.

That is a render of the artwork, not a photograph of a coin. Here is the same design after it came off the laser, capsuled and ready to hand over:

Coins are usually a gift or a presentation piece, so they are worth getting right. They can carry a name and a date too:

Send me the unit, the shop, the name, the occasion, and I will draw something.

Acrylic, and rapid prototyping

Cut to shape, engraved on the front or the back, layered, or edge-lit so the engraving glows. Sharp lines and no fraying.

If you design things for a living, this is the part worth knowing. Enclosure faces and front panels with labeled cutouts. Control panels. Display stands and retail fixtures. Jigs, templates and fixtures for your own shop. Scale models and massing studies. Test fits to check a bracket lines up before you commit to tooling.

Send a DXF or an SVG with your cut lines and engrave lines separated and I can work straight from it. If all you have is a sketch on grid paper, that is fine too — I will draw it up and send you a proof first.

Tell me the sheet size and thickness you need. Acrylic is sourced per project rather than kept on the shelf, so I will confirm what I can get and what it costs before you commit to anything.

Iterating is the whole point. Cutting version three because one and two taught you something is not waste, it is the process working. Tell me roughly how many rounds you expect and I will price the run rather than the piece.

How long it takes

Most work goes out within the week, usually by that weekend. I will not put a date on something I have not looked at, so here is the honest version: if you have a deadline, tell me at the start. I will look at what is already on the machine and give you a yes or a no. A straight no early is worth more to you than a maybe that slips.

Ready-made patches that are in stock usually go out in three to seven days.

Who keeps what

Artwork you send me stays yours. The production file I build to cut from stays with me — I do not send out source files. It is kept on record so your reorders cost the patch price and nothing more, which is why the design fee is charged once rather than every time.

Larger orders

Ordering in volume, or need a repeatable run for a unit, a shop, a team or an event? Put the quantity and the date you need it by in the message below and I will come back with pricing and a schedule. If it is easier to talk it through, say so and we will set up a call.

What to tell me

  • What the piece is, and roughly how big
  • How many you need
  • When you need them — especially if it is a hard deadline
  • Whether you already have artwork, or want me to draw it

If you are holding something and wondering whether it will take a burn, just ask. The answer is usually yes, and when it is not I will tell you straight.

I will reply with a quote. Nothing goes on the laser until you have approved a proof.
